In Memorium of Gloria

March 31, 2026

The passing of anyone is cause for grief from loved ones but for The Cherokeean Herald, this week we saw the death of long-time co-worker and friend Gloria Jennings. Gloria was a staple in the Cherokee County newspaper business, having worked for the Jacksonville Daily Progress and then here at the Cherokeean Herald for an additional 25 years, from which she retired from in 2015.
I first met her almost 45 years ago when I moved to East Texas and went to work for the Whiteheads. Over the years I followed her path to the clergy and when Penny and I got married, we were the first wedding she officiated at the Dialville Methodist Church, where I later served as the pastor. She often said she “tied that knot tight,” and she must have, because we’re still together.
Much of the foundation of this newspaper was due to her always fair and honest reporting. for which we are extremely grateful.
A woman of steadfast faith, Gloria has earned God’s promise, so dear friend … vaya con Dios
