Area Juneteenth closures

Juneteenth will be observed Thursday in the US, a federal holiday signed into law by former President Joe Biden and the 117th Congress with the Juneteenth National Independence Day Act in 2021. 
It commemorates the emancipation of the last enslaved people on June 19, 1865, in Galveston by Union soldiers.
In Cherokee County, a number of government entities will be closed Thursday in observance of holiday including Alto, Cuney, Wells, New Summerfield and Troup. Financial institutions and US post offices also are closed Thursday, as are the Cherokee County Courthouse and county offices.
However, municipal offices remaining open are those in Jacksonville and Rusk. The Cherokeean Herald newspaper offices also remain open Thursday.
