CHEROKEE COUNTY - A number of local schools will reopen campuses Jan. 17, 2024, following winter weather conditions in East Texas, but Jacksonville officials will wait until Thursday, Jan. 18, to resume classes.

“Our administrators have been out driving roads in many locations and while most streets look fine, we must take into consideration the vast number of rural roads and bridges that will not be, especially with temperatures remaining below freezing until later tomorrow,” read a JISD announcement.

Other area districts reopening campuses on Wednesday at regular hours are Alto, Wells and Rusk.

Districts with a 2-hourr delayed start Wednesday include New Summerfield, Bullard and Troup, with those schools also doing delayed bus routes to coincide with opening hours, officials said.
