Area ISDs announce Tuesday weather-related closures

CHEROKEE COUNTY – School districts have announced weather-related closures for Tuesday, Jan. 16, 2024, with several also posting rescheduled varsity basketball games.

“As always, the safety of our students and staff is our top priority,” New Summerfield ISD officials stated in a Facebook post Monday announcing cancellation of all classes and activities for the upcoming school day. “Thank you for understanding and please continue to check all of our district communication for any updates regarding Wednesday. Stay safe and warm!”
Hornet basketball games initially scheduled for Tuesday night have been moved to Wednesday – the Hornets and Lady Hornets will play Overton at New Summerfield 5 p.m. Wednesday.

In Troup, campuses are closed Tuesday, with a 10 a.m. start planned for Wednesday, Buses will be on a two-hour delay to ensure safety that day, and Tiger basketball at Arp begins with varsity girls playing at 4 p.m., followed by varsity boys at 5:15 p.m. No JV games are scheduled, officials said.

Jacksonville ISD’s Tuesday closure also includes all extra-curricular activities scheduled that day, said JISD Communications Officer Grace Traylor.

Rusk ISD officials said that due to icy road conditions, Tuesday classes are canceled, and will resume Wednesday.

Alto ISD will provide social media updates regarding Wednesday’s schedule; there are no classes on Tuesday, officials said.

In Wells, school officials will monitor weather and road conditions on Tuesday. No classes are planned then, with varsity boys and varsity girls basketball games against Kennard rescheduled to 6 p.m. Wednesday.

BMA Seminary in Jacksonville will be closed Tuesday, due to concerns about travel safety of staff and students. Meanwhile, no campus closures have been called for Jacksonville College, which begins the Spring 2024 semester on Wednesday.

Tyler Junior College announced that all TJC locations will be closed Tuesday, with information updated via its TJC Alert messaging system. Officials said housing check-in will continue once the college re-opens.
