Cherokee County under heat advisory through Monday afternoon

National Weather Service officials in Shreveport issued a heat advisory through 7 p.m. Monday, June 14, for Cherokee County and surrounding areas, including north central and Northwest Louisiana.

According to an advisory posted at 11:33 a.m. Monday, heat index values are predicted to be between 105 and 109 degrees through 7 p.m. this evening.

“Hot temperatures and high humidity may cause heat illnesses to occur,” officials warned, and advised the following precautions:

• Drink plenty of fluids

• Stay in an air-conditioned or cooled room

• Stay out of the sun

• Check on elderly relatives and neighbors.

• Do not leave young children or pets unattended in vehicles under any circumstances.

“Take extra precautions if you work or spend time outside,” officials said. “When

possible reschedule strenuous activities to early morning or evening. Know the signs and symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat stroke. Wear lightweight and loose-fitting clothing when possible.”

To reduce risk during outdoor work, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration recommends scheduling frequent rest breaks in shaded or air-conditioned environments.
